Partner Compliance Kit
If you use a Decision Widget embed with your own Amazon Associates tag, you must comply with FTC guidelines and the Amazon Associates Operating Agreement. This page gives you everything you need.
Why disclosure matters
- The FTC requires that affiliate relationships be disclosed clearly and conspicuously — in interactive media the disclosure must be “unavoidable.”
- The Amazon Associates Operating Agreement requires you to display the statement below on every page that contains affiliate links, placed near those links so visitors “shouldn’t have to hunt for it.”
- Non-compliance can result in termination of your Amazon Associates account and loss of unpaid commissions.
Required Amazon disclosure statement
Copy and paste this statement exactly as written. Place it near the Decision Widget embed on every page where it appears.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.Where to place the disclosure
The disclosure must be visible without scrolling past the widget. The best location is directly above or below the embed code. Here are ready-to-use snippets for common platforms:
WordPress / HTML
<p style="font-size:0.75rem;color:#6b7280;margin-bottom:8px"> As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Product links on this page are affiliate links. </p> <!-- Your Decision Widget embed code here -->
Substack / Markdown
*As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Product links below are affiliate links.* [Your Decision Widget embed code]
Ghost / Any CMS
Add a text block above the widget with the disclosure statement in a small, muted font. Most CMS platforms let you set font size and color directly.
Built-in widget disclosure
Decision Widget already includes a micro-disclosure inside the quiz and table embeds (“Links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you”). This supplements but does not replace your on-page disclosure. You still need the Amazon Associates statement visible on the host page itself.
Link attributes (handled for you)
All affiliate links inside Decision Widget embeds include rel="nofollow sponsored" as required by Google’s webmaster guidelines. “Powered by” attribution links include rel="nofollow". You do not need to add these attributes yourself — they are built into the embed code.
Dos and Don’ts
Do
- Place the Amazon disclosure on every page with an embed
- Keep the disclosure visible without extra scrolling
- Use your own legitimate Amazon Associates tag
- Ensure your site has its own privacy policy and disclosure page
- Write your own editorial context around the widget (why you recommend this category)
Don’t
- Hide or obscure the disclosure statement
- Use the widget as the sole content on a page (add your own editorial value)
- Claim rankings are your own editorial picks (they are algorithm-generated by Decision Widget)
- Use someone else’s Amazon tag or share tag credentials
- Place embeds on incentivized-traffic or spam sites
